Memories in the Making

Orchard Artworks is sponsoring an invitational art show by the Alzheimer’s Association. Memories in the Making is a fine arts program for people with Alzheimer’s. As part of the program, patients with no art background can create art and regain the ability to communicate while boosting self-esteem and opening the channels of communication with loved ones. The Program gives something back to patients, families, and the community that no other program has been able to duplicate. Patients benefit through the creation of art. Families benefit because communication is made possible, allowing them to develop a unique appreciation of their loved one with Alzheimer’s or dementia. Every picture is important and valid. Its value lies in the creative process of making the art and expressing feelings and emotions trapped inside. The ensuing sense of accomplishment brings renewed joy and self-respect to the patient.

Our exhibit presents a selection of these paintings and the stories of each artist. The messages are from the person who is striving to maintain his or her own dignity and identity, despite the ravages of dementia. Each painting is named by the Alzheimer-artist and the artwork is totally their own creation. The artists speak with powerful brush strokes of color and tentative tracings of line. They pull us into the world of a person with Alzheimer's. As we look at their paintings, we see their stories in a language that needs no words. Their paintings show us glimpses of who they were and who they still are. They call out to us in a way we cannot ignore.

The exhibit contains paintings from seven communities throughout the area from Philadelphia’s Chestnut Hill and Latino community and suburban Reading and Allentown to Frederick and Topton.

Prayer Beads Background: When early peoples found a stone or shell with a hole in it, there was an instinct to put a cord through it and wear it on the body as a talisman. Evolving carved images worn in this way would seem to connect to the Ancient Church and correspondences. Why do different religions have differing numbers of beads in their prayer bead strands? Is there actual power in the beads? Workshop: Participants are encouraged to bring any beads or talismans that have significance to them. We will look at a brief history of objects and beads worn as "power" holders, with a focus on prayer beads. Gail will display and discuss some of her collection of amulets and prayer beads gathered for many years. This will be followed by a group discussion of how wearing these is felt to impact the wearer. Participants will then have the opportunity to put together a bracelet or necklace that could be seen as "holding" prayers. Some beads will be available and others can be purchased. Materials: Gail will provide a selection of beads for the activity part of this workshop. Participants are encouraged to bring beads to share. Some special beads might be available for purchase.

Leader Bio: Gail Simons has been drawn to beads from her first experience of looking at National Geographic Magazines. Though she participates in the craft world by making and selling jewelry, she is also very interested in the symbolic nature and possible life enhancing qualities of body adornment, both in history and in current times.
